But, hematopoietic stem cells are able to cross as well.<\/p>\n<p>Blood-forming stem cells in red bone marrow will eventually develop into various kinds of blood cells that complete different functions.<\/p>\n<p>The red blood cells are necessary to disperse oxygen throughout the body. Meanwhile, white blood cells serve as a shield against infection and disease. Platelets prevent excessive bleeding by creating clots.<\/p>\n<p>Mesenchymal cells are located in the bone marrow cavity.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span id=\"Development\" class=\"ez-toc-section\"><\/span>Development<\/h4>\n<p>At the end of pre-birth development, bone marrow initially develops in the fetus\u2019 clavicle. Three weeks later, the marrow is active.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/terms\/bone_marrow.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bone marrow is entirely red<\/a>\u00a0until you\u2019re about seven years old. As you get older, some of that red marrow starts to become yellow marrow or fat tissue. Cancer treatments may diminish the body\u2019s ability to form blood cells, so a transplant can bring your numbers back up.<\/p>\n<p>Replacing marrow can also prevent more damage being done by a genetic disease, like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/rarediseases.info.nih.gov\/diseases\/12559\/hurler-syndrome\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hurler\u2019s syndrome<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span id=\"What_Are_The_Requirements_For_Donating_Bone_Marrow\" class=\"ez-toc-section\"><\/span><strong>What Are The Requirements For Donating Bone Marrow?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Not everyone is able to donate their bone marrow, as there are some guidelines that need to be kept in mind.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span id=\"Age\" class=\"ez-toc-section\"><\/span>Age<\/h3>\n<p>If you want to donate marrow, you need to be between the ages of 18 and 44. Older people can\u2019t give, as when you\u2019re younger, your cells are of better quality than those of an older adult.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, the age restriction is set for the sake of the donor in terms of health. The risk of complication will be slightly higher. The requirement is also put in place to ensure only quality marrow is given to the recipient. Patients given marrow cells from younger donors are more likely to survive.<\/p>\n<p>Although younger donors are better, people younger than 18 can\u2019t donate due to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ages_of_consent_in_North_America\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">national age of consent<\/a>\u00a0(18 years old), even if a parent gives permission.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span id=\"Aids_HIV\" class=\"ez-toc-section\"><\/span>Aids\/ HIV<\/h3>\n<p>If you\u2019ve ever been diagnosed with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hiv.gov\/hiv-basics\/overview\/about-hiv-and-aids\/what-are-hiv-and-aids\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AIDS<\/a>\u00a0or HIV, you\u2019re unable to become a bone marrow donor, as the disease will be transmitted.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span id=\"Allergies\" class=\"ez-toc-section\"><\/span>Allergies<\/h3>\n<p>For most allergies, such as light animal allergies, pollen\/<a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/allergies\/environmental-allergies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">environmental allergies<\/a>, and medication\/latex allergies, you\u00a0<em>are<\/em>\u00a0able to donate.<\/p>\n<p>However, if you have a potentially fatal allergy, there is a chance you might be denied the registration.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span id=\"Arthritis\" class=\"ez-toc-section\"><\/span>Arthritis<\/h3>\n<p>With mild or moderate\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/osteoarthritis\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20351925\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">osteoarthritis<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.verywellhealth.com\/what-is-degenerative-arthritis-189342\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">degenerative arthritis<\/a>, you should remain eligible to donate. Keep in mind mild\/moderate arthritis means it has only a small effect on your day to day activities. You should also be able to relieve it with medicine.<\/p>\n<p>If your condition is severe, you can\u2019t donate. These include, but are not limited to:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Rheumatoid arthritis (RA)<\/li>\n<li>Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/fibromyalgia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fibromyalgia<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/multiple-sclerosis\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20350269\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Multiple sclerosis<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Severe psoriasis<\/li>\n<li>Sjogren\u2019s syndrome<\/li>\n<li>Ankylosing spondylitis<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/addisons-disease\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20350293\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Addison\u2019s disease<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Chronic fatigue syndrome<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You can, however, donate if the autoimmune illness you\u2019re dealing with is mild and secluded to one organ\/organ system in your body, such as:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Celiac disease<\/li>\n<li>Crohn\u2019s disease<\/li>\n<li>Graves\u2019 disease<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/guillain-barre-syndrome\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20362793\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Guillain-barre syndrome<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Hashimoto\u2019s thyroiditis<\/li>\n<li>Mild psoriasis<\/li>\n<li>Meniere\u2019s disease<\/li>\n<li>Raynaud\u2019s syndrome<\/li>\n<li>Ulcerative colitis<\/li>\n<li>Vitiligo<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span id=\"Bleeding_Issues\" class=\"ez-toc-section\"><\/span>Bleeding Issues<\/h3>\n<p>If you have a condition that causes uncontrollable bleeding, such as hemophilia, ever had a blood clot deep in your veins, or any similar issues, you can\u2019t donate.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span id=\"Brain_Injury_Surgery\" class=\"ez-toc-section\"><\/span>Brain Injury &amp; Surgery<\/h3>\n<p>Having had an extensive brain injury or brain surgery, you can\u2019t become a donor, even if you are 100% recovered.<\/p>\n<p>Also, if you\u2019ve had more than six concussions throughout your lifetime, been knocked out over sixty minutes because of a concussion, or had a concussion so severe it lasted over a month, you cannot register.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019ve had to deal with cells that could potentially lead to cancer, you\u2019re able to donate. None of these disqualify you from donating, as long as you did not need\/receive any chemotherapy:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Cured localized skin cancer<\/li>\n<li>Early stage healed breast cancer in situ<\/li>\n<li>Bladder cancer in early stages<\/li>\n<li>Early stage cured cervical cancer<\/li>\n<li>Early stage melanoma<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Other types of cancers, except for blood cancer, are also okay, as long as its been at least five years since you were diagnosed, it didn\u2019t reoccur, and you didn\u2019t need any chemo or radiation.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span id=\"Drug_Use_Mental_Health_Issues\" class=\"ez-toc-section\"><\/span>Drug Use\/ Mental Health Issues<\/h3>\n<p>If in the past you\u2019ve dealt with addiction or mental health, it\u2019s okay to donate as long as you\u2019ve gone through treatment and have been sober for at least a year.<\/p>\n<p>Conditions such as these do not disqualify you as long as you\u2019re stable:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/add-adhd\/childhood-adhd\/add-vs-adhd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ADD\/ ADHD<\/a><\/li>\n<li>B<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nimh.nih.gov\/health\/topics\/bipolar-disorder\/index.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ipolar<\/a><\/li>\n<li>M<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/depression\/guide\/bipolar-disorder-manic-depression\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">anic-depressive disorder<\/a><\/li>\n<li>D<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/depression\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20356007\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">epression<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>However, any significant mental health ailments like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nimh.nih.gov\/health\/topics\/schizophrenia\/index.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">schizophrenia<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/schizophrenia\/guide\/delusional-disorder\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">delusional disorder<\/a>\u00a0will disqualify you.<\/p>\n<p>The reason for the mental health guideline is to make sure that, once you register, you\u2019ll remain stable enough to participate.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span id=\"Diabetes\" class=\"ez-toc-section\"><\/span>Diabetes<\/h3>\n<p>If you have a type of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalnewstoday.com\/articles\/323627.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">diabetes<\/a>\u00a0that requires you to take insulin, or if your diabetes has lead to other issues such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.niddk.nih.gov\/health-information\/kidney-disease\/heart-disease\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">kidney or heart disease<\/a>, you will not be able to donate bone marrow.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span id=\"Heart_Disease\" class=\"ez-toc-section\"><\/span>Heart Disease<\/h3>\n<p>If you have heart disease, your bone marrow is not able to be donated. You can\u2019t have had any heart attacks,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/tests-procedures\/coronary-bypass-surgery\/about\/pac-20384589\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bypass surgery<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/treatment-tests-and-therapies\/mitral-valve-replacement-open\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mitral valve replacement surgery<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhlbi.nih.gov\/health-topics\/pacemakers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pacemakers<\/a>, etc.<\/p>\n<p>But there are some exceptions.
